BOSSICK Series: Mansfield Madison, 21 Oct 14

6 schools and 8 teams converged on Madison Comprehensive High School near Mansfield for the opening event of the 2014-2015 BOSSICK Series, revamped to include large schools after being small school centric last season.

The two small schools in the field, Ontario and Bucyrus, both had enough players to split into A and B teams. In Ontario's case, they could have split into 4 teams. They were joined by Olentangy Liberty, Lexington, Ashland, and the hosts.

Teams were split into Green and White divisions for the first three round. Green consisted of Ashland, Ontario B, Madison, and Bucyrus A. White had Lexington, Olentangy Liberty, Ontario A, and Bucyrus B. They finished in the order listed; both groups were well-ordered 3-0, 2-1, 1-2, 0-3). This was enough for Ontario to clinch an SSNCT bid, pending enrollment verification.

In the cross-division games which followed, Bucyrus B lost both to finish 0-5. Bucyrus A finished in 7th (1-4), Madison took sixth (2-3), and Ontario A got fifth (3-2). Ontario B lost both games in the upper crossover to take fourth place (2-3) while Olentangy Liberty fell one game (actually, about 35 points) short of a national bid taking third (3-2).

The final, which was preceded by a matchup between the same two teams in round five, was between one-time HSNCT participant Lexington and Ashland. When they heard that they had qualified for HSNCT, Ashland was really happy. Stoked, even. We'll see if they follow that up. In any case, Ashland won both round 5 and round 6 -- the latter by 310-115 -- to claim first place and the OAC bid on offer.

Top scorer by some distance was Barat from Ashland, hitting 91 ppg before the final. Their ppb was 20.78 (including the final), which is close to what Hubbard has done on A-sets this year. They also had scoring from all four chairs in the final. If they can be convinced to go to some places, they wouldn't just make up the numbers.

They teams that I read for were all appreciative of the tournament. It was great to work with Greg and Tom. I love seeing the smaller teams that many have not heard of like Lexington. My friend Julie Frye teaches French there and she is top notch. Great reflection of a lesser known school.
