I figured that might be the case. Overall, I don't know if it is a bad thing though. If you look at WC, Dublin Jerome was fairly close to us through the categories (we led 33-19), but then we beat them by 9 in the alphabet. So it took a close game, and provided separation for the team who knew harder material. Same with the two matches we played against Sidney (while they are obviously much closer to us in performance), where we won 17-13 and 19-13 in the alphabet. I think when you have two teams that are fairly closely matched, having a tough alphabet round serves to separate. I know we led Sidney by 1 going into the alphabet the first time and came out ahead 5, so the alphabet definitely worked to provide separation. Similarly, we led by 7 the second time and came out ahead 13.

Honestly, I thought it was balanced fairly well since the category round questions were generally very easy. Teams should expect tougher questions at the next level, and if those came in the alphabet and to some extent, the final round, then I think that works. Better than having one team get an easy team question and the other one get a hose. There were next to none of those in this set, which I thought was awesome.

I think if we make the alphabet rounds easier in future years to accommodate the lower tiered teams, we will have the top teams going 19-19 or 19-18 in the alphabet round, thus essentially making it a waste of four minutes. Having it provide separation is a much better scenario.
