BOSSICK Series: Conneaut HS, March 11

At the northeastern tip of Ohio, six schools came together. Conneaut and Newbury each fielded two teams, so there were eight total. We split into two groups of four.

Blue Streak: Grand Valley, 3-0; Jefferson Area, 2-1; Conneaut A, 1-2; Newbury B, 0-3.
Little Dipper: Newbury A, 2-1; Edgewood, 2-1; Maplewood, 2-1; Conneaut B, 0-3.

The circle of death was broken at the buzzer. Maplewood played Newbury (these two had the highest ppb) over 4 tossups and bonuses for first place in the group. Newbury won. Maplewood had a second chance against Edgewood. Needing twenty on the last bonus, they only got ten.

The top two in each group played each other in the next two rounds, as did the bottom two. After Round 5, the standings were...

Grand Valley, 4-1
Newbury A, 4-1
Jefferson, 3-2
Edgewood, 2-3
----------------
Maplewood, 4-1
Conneaut A, 2-3
Newbury B, 1-4
Conneaut B, 0-5

Grand Valley was up by 35 with two to play against Newbury, but couldn't hold on to clear the field. In the following single game final, Newbury won fairly comfortably. Both finalists received national bids, while Newbury could claim one of the last OAC positions if it wants to.

The tournament's top two scorers were from Maplewood, but playing in the bottom half group padded the stats a bit. The top player in the top half was Ben from Edgewood, 5-18-3.
