Today Miami Valley competed in Washington University Fall Academic Tournament II with the VTACO set. Our two-person team (John John and William Groger) finished the morning relatively easily with a 7-0 record. In the playoffs, we finished 1-1 with a win against Eureka and a 400-250 loss to Washington A (better than expected and winning until tossup 16). Moving to the superplayoffs, we lost to MICDS and Ladue A, bringing us to 4th place with a final record of 8-3. We finished about the way we expected, and we got to play against a friend on Ladue A, Jack Madden. Washington ended up beating MICDS in a two-game final, with Ladue coming 3rd.
Obviously, Washington and MICDS have very strong players, but Ladue is positioned to be very good in the years to come, as their team is all sophomores. Wash U ran a great tournament today, however some rules specific to Missouri provided for some cringeworthy mistakes. One rule that took some getting used to was the need to be recognized before answering tossups. In addition, there were no powers, so scores were not as high as they could have been (for better or worse). Good to change things up and see some different competition. We plan to attend next year.
