Cameron Flint, the Cloverleaf Academic Challenge Team, and I present the Cloverleaf Start of the Season Stampede on Saturday, October 18 at Cloverleaf High School.
This tournament will be split into two divisions based on skill and experience with pyramidal, tossup-bonus quizbowl. The division for more experienced teams will play on the 2014 NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament (SSNCT) set. Consequently, any team that has already played or purchased this set is ineligible to play in this division. This set is roughly equivalent to a standard Invitational Series NAQT set, with slightly higher difficulty. The rough distribution of the set is available to see here: http://www.naqt.com/hs/championship-distribution.jsp
The division for less experienced teams will play on the 2014-2015 edition of the Scholastic Cooperative Outreach Network (SCOP) Novice set. This is (so far) the first scheduled run for that set nationwide. All high and middle schools may enter teams, but high school players should be new to quizbowl or, at least, new to pyramidal tossup-bonus quizbowl. If demand is great enough, separate middle school divisions may be organized.
Entry fees are as follows:
$65 per team for the SSNCT mirror
$45 per team for the SCOP mirror
(-$5) per working, 8-player-minimum buzzer system
(-$10) per competent moderator; teams intending to claim this discount must notify us of the name of the prospective moderator in their entry so we may do our due diligence before agreeing to grant this discount
The distribution for this set is as follows:
5 tossups/5 bonuses in Science, including 1/1 of conceptual [noncomputational] mathematics
4/4 Literature
4/4 History
2/2 Religion and Mythology
2/2 Fine Arts
1/1 Geography
1/1 Current Events
1/1 Pop culture and/or anything else considered non-academic, commonly referred to in the lingo as "trash"
Coaches are trusted to use their best judgment to self-select the division(s) entered by their team(s), but we reserve the right to ask for rosters in advance and check any available statistics for teams and their listed players, then follow up with feedback as needed.
Details regarding maximum field sizes are yet to be determined. Watch this space...
