The Case Western Reserve University Trivia Team is pleased to announce the third iteration of Rock and Roll Hall of Shame, a high school trash tournament to kick off the new season, on Saturday, September 30, 2017 on the CWRU campus in Cleveland, Ohio.

Trash questions are taken from the areas of popular culture including movies, television, music, sports, games, computers, video games, etc.; anything not really considered "academic." As this may be the first tournament of the season that students play in, the goal of the tournament is to kick off the new year and expose students to the fun that is quizbowl while also preparing them for the regular season. This tournament is not meant solely for novice players, since it is often the case that experienced teams who would normally excel at academic questions are awful at trash questions (and vice versa). There is no separate division for JV players; all teams will play in the same division.

The set is a house-written collaboration of the CWRU Trivia Team. I (Tyler McMaken) will serve as editor. The matches will be tossup/bonus (NAQT/HSAPQ) format, 20 questions per round with 1 tie-breaker. Based on results/feedback from previous iterations of the tournament, the distribution is set as:
6/6 Movies/TV
3/3 Music
2/2 Games
3/3 Sports
3/3 Internet/Technology
1/1 Conspiracies
3/3 Miscellaneous.
However, no piece of knowledge in pop culture can be presented in isolation, and we hope this is reflected in our questions (e.g. a sports question will not simply list stats of a baseball player or team, but instead may ask for common threads, a city where a team is located but also where a celebrity grew up, sports in movies, etc.).

Base team fee: $45
Additional teams discount: -$10 for each extra team
Buzzer discount: -$5 per working set (max 1 per team)
Travel discount: -$10 per 100 miles traveled one way

To register, send an email to our President, Tyler McMaken, at with the number of teams your school will be bringing and all discounts of which you intend to take advantage.
The cost includes your very own copy of the questions used at the tournament.
Registration will close on Wednesday, September 27th, but please don’t wait until the last minute to register! It’s better to send tentative plans early.
Please bring your payment with you the morning of the tournament, either cash or check (made out to “CWRU College Trivia Club”).

Registration will take place at 8 AM - 8:30 AM, with a general meeting at 8:45 AM and play beginning promptly at 9 AM. We will be finished at roughly 3:30 PM, 4 at the latest.
The full schedule for the day will be sent out to registered teams once registration closes, and matches will likely take place in either the Sears building on the main quad or in the strange but amazing Peter B. Lewis building (designed by Frank Gehry).
The championship and runner-up teams will receive awards, and we will also have individual awards for the top scorer and the neg master.

Southern Ohio: February 3, 2018 @ Waverly HS
Central Ohio: March 3, 2018 @ New Albany HS
If you would like to host a mirror of this tournament, pm me or send me an email. The mirror fee will be $9/team.
***Please note that this tournament is distinct from the trash tournament run by Bob Kilner in December. We encourage teams to attend both tournaments (or if you can't make it to Cleveland on September 30th, attend a mirror)!

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or wish to register, please email me ( - we look forward to seeing you at Case on September 30th!
