The Miami Valley School quiz bowl team cordially invites you to the second annual MVS Fall Kickoff Tournament on September 29, 2018. We will run a high school division and a middle school division. The initial field cap for the high school division will be 18 teams and the initial field cap for the middle school division will be 12 teams. If there is sufficient interest, we will try to raise those caps, provided that we have enough moderators and we can secure enough space on our small campus.

QUESTION SETS & FORMAT:
The high school division will play NAQT’s IS-177 set and the middle school division will play NAQT MS-27.

The top 15% of each division will qualify for NAQT’s all-school National Championship Tournaments (HSNCT and MSNCT). Additionally, the top 30% of small-school eligible teams will qualify for NAQT’s Small School National Championship Tournament (SSNCT). More info on those tournaments, including NAQT's definition of "small school," is available on NAQT’s website.

Teams will be grouped into initial brackets of six and play a round robin within their bracket. After lunch, we will re-bracket teams for afternoon rounds. During afternoon rounds, teams will be placed against other teams with similar records. Assuming a full field, all middle school teams will play at least eight games, while all high school teams will play at least ten games.

Any Ohio high school team that finishes first in its morning bracket will qualify for OAC Regionals, the first step on the road to the OAC State Championship.

PAYMENT:
Payment can be made to The Miami Valley School (put "Quiz Bowl" in the memo). Our address is 5151 Denise Dr, Dayton, OH 45429. You may also bring cash or check to the tournament site.

Registration will be from 8:00 A.M. until 8:30 A.M., followed by a brief meeting for coaches and players. We expect to begin play promptly at 9:00 A.M.

FEES:
First Team: $60
Each Additional Team: $50
BUZZER DISCOUNT: -$5 per buzzer system, limit two per team that you are bringing.
READER DISCOUNT: -$10 for a competent moderator, limit two per team that you are bringing.
TRAVEL DISCOUNT: There is a $10 discount for teams traveling over 100 miles one way (our zip code is 45429).
MINIMUM Fee: $35

If your program has not played a pyramidal tossup-bonus quiz bowl tournament in the last three years, your team(s) will automatically qualify for the minimum fee of $35. Please ask if you have questions regarding this discount.

MVS is committed to the outreach missions of the Ohio Quizbowl Alliance (OQBA) and the OAC. If your program has financial limitations but you still would like to play and gain experience, let us know and we can discuss options.

For lunch, we will offer cheese and pepperoni pizza for $10/pie. There is a dearth of convenient dining options around MVS, so please plan on staying on-site.

To register or for more information contact Tyler Benedict: tyler DOT benedict AT mvschool DOT com. We hope to see you in Dayton in September!

We are happy to announce that the field cap for the middle school division at Fall Kickoff has been raised to 18 teams! Please pass the news along to any MS coaches you know who are looking for an event this September.

With the addition of teams from Tippecanoe and Allderdice (Pittsburgh, PA), the high school division has 15 of 18 spots filled. If the field fills in the next few weeks, we will maintain a waitlist. If it looks like we can get to a good number from the waitlist (namely, 24 teams), we will raise the field cap and let those waitlisted teams in the field. Email soon if you want to register for Fall Kickoff!

The addition of two-time Traditional Public SSNCT champions Glasgow High School (KY) brings us to three states represented at Fall Kickoff and 16 teams in the high school field! Keep the registrations coming!

With Detroit Catholic Central A and B joining the field, we are now at 18 teams in the high school division. As detailed above, any subsequent high school teams will be added to the waitlist until we reach our new field cap of 24 teams.

Also, if any currently registered schools would like to bring more teams, please let me know and I will add your additional teams to the waitlist. Thanks!

Field update: we had two HS teams drop last week, but Henderson County and Dublin Scioto have registered to fill those spots, so we are back to 18 teams with 6 spots to go on the waitlist.

With Carroll's registration, there is one spot remaining in the high school field for Fall Kickoff before we hit our hard cap of 24 teams!

If you need any more incentive to register, this tournament is now officially a PACE NSC platinum qualifier, which means the top 25% of teams in the high school field will qualify for the PACE National Scholastic Championship, held on June 8-9 at the Hyatt Regency Reston in northern Virginia.

George Washington (Charleston, WV) has registered one team for the high school division, which means that St. Charles, Solon C, Oakwood, Carroll, and GW are in the field and we have hit our cap of 24 teams. The field for the high school division is now closed and all subsequent teams will be placed on a waitlist in case of drops.

After a drop, there is now one spot available in the HS field.

Bellefontaine has registered one team in the high school division, so the HS field is once again at 24 teams.

The middle school field looks to have settled at 12 teams, which is an ideal number for the tournament. I'm going to close the MS field now, with any subsequent MS registrations going on the waitlist.

One Tippecanoe HS team has dropped. They will be replaced by our standby team, Beavercreek C.

Additionally, a logistical email has been sent to all teams. Don't forget to send in your lunch orders and rosters before 3:00 PM tomorrow!
