After watching the documentary The Dynasty That Almost Was on the 1990's Indians it got me thinking about quiz bowl. What are some of the best quiz bowl teams that could not get over the hump to win it all?

OAC-wise, there was the GHHS teams of 1990 and 1997-99. The 1990 team ran into the brilliant Ben Gum and teammates from Beavercreek in the state finals and the 1997-99 teams ran into the Brandon Eilertson and Edward Chang-led Copley teams.

I think Fisher with Tom and Brandon was fantastic but unfortunately overlapped with Sam Blizzard's Northmont teams.

Tipp in 2005 was a dynamite team, as was Solon and my GHHS team that year actually owned Solon and were pretty much on-par with Tipp, but Copley won the state title after their captain returned the week before from a long illness that kept him out of school and competitions for months.

I'll let others chime in on NAQT over the past 7-8 years. Our multiple NAQT small school champion teams never won a state title despite being exceptionally good (South Range and Beachwood come to mind especially).

Sycamore, be it the Ashivn or Artur eras. Academic Aves, 2012-2013, deserves a plug, too. Wins over Northmont and Solon at NAQT States 2013 (T-Bolts and Comets finished NAQT State Champ and Runners-Up that day.)

2011-2012 Hawken.

2010-2011 Northmont was by far the best team to not win either OAC State or NAQT State in my playing career.

IMO, Zel Demere, Nour Hijazi, or Arjun Venkataraman are the best players to not win a state title, post-2010.

Here are some I thought of:

As mentioned above, 2016-2017 Dublin Scioto, which did not play in either state tournament.

2014-2015 Solon made a very deep run to mark the best finish by an Ohio team at HSNCT since 2005, but a month before that happened wasn't a convincingly better team than 2014-2015 Sidney, both of whom lost state championships to then-senior Sam Blizzard's Northmont teams.

2013-2014 Dublin Scioto was the only team to hand Northmont a loss in the NAQT state championship that year. 2013-2014 Fisher Catholic was also a good team.

2011-2012 Hawken was definitely one of the best teams in Ohio that year.

2010-2011 Northmont was, along with Copley and Olmsted Falls, one of the three best teams in Ohio that year and was the only one not to secure a state championship (despite winning NAQT the previous year).

2008-2009 Stow-Munroe Falls (Ike Jose's senior year) did not play any state championships, but was the only team in Ohio that could claim to be better than Walnut Hills that year. EDIT: 2008-2009 Ottawa Hills comes close too
