2017-2018

What do you all think the Ohio quiz bowl landscape will look like next year? Here are my early predictions:

1. Scioto
2. Beavercreek
3. Miami Valley
4. Copley/Solon

As for us, we lose most of our religion/philosophy as well as a large chunk of European History with Ricky and music with Simon. Fortunately, our underclassmen are dedicated and should be able to help recoup the seniors’ scoring. Jack is an excellent mythology player and is taking over the rest of RMP from Ricky. Danny is amazing at US History and is working on music and bio as well. I'm spending the summer primarily working on fixing our science hole. Our fourth chair will be rotating for now, but we have a few good candidates to lock up the position.

I'm not sure what Scioto or Beavercreek are returning outside of Clark and Hari, but I would think they are definitely up there at 1-2 in either order. Miami Valley will continue to grow and improve. Adding William full-time as the #2 will definitely make them stronger. If they can fill the small bit of holes they have, they will jump up into the top 2 conversation as well. Copley will still be good, but they do lose Kevin. If Nathan is their 4th chair as a freshman, that would give them a good 4th to go with Srikar and Tommy. Hopefully, Frank gets more aggressive on the buzzer because he definitely knows stuff and is a good player.

I'm interested to see what teams that are out there come out of the woodwork sort of like Lakewood did the last 2-3 years. There are definitely a few out there that I expect to make some noise. I can't wait to see how everything plays out.

I think my top four would be identical to Pranav's...Scioto will be looking for a bit of support to replace departing senior Enoch Fu, who was an excellent science specialist for them last year (and for Ohio A at NASAT), but Clark didn't make the national A team for nothing. It'll come down to whether one of the remaining Scioto players (Sanjay, Eddy, Gabe) can chip in their 20 per game to fill the gaps and how much Clark continues to branch out. On a hard housewrite or nationals-level set, I think they still have an edge. Hari played great at NASAT and NSC as well, so Beavercreek will be in much the same position, retaining their #1 scorer and looking to David, Ziyi, et al. to take a little larger piece.

I won't delve too deeply into Miami Valley except to say that I think third is the right spot for us right now, and I hope we show good improvement throughout the year.

I guess I'd give Copley a slight edge over Solon today for really no good reason at all...clearly Copley felt the loss of Kevin at the end of the year, but I think the Tommy-Srikar senior punch plus the strong freshman-sophomore class (Jun, Frank, Nathan) should be able to form a pretty typical, specialized CHS squad. It'll be interesting to see if Nathan takes a spot on the A team right away or if he becomes the anchor for Copley B, since his knowledge base might overlap with some of the returning varsity scorers. He's certainly good enough to play and make an impact this year, as demonstrated by his performances at some of last season's HS tournaments. Solon also has a bunch of talented rising youngsters (led by Timmy and Sam), also is trying to replace a senior captain (Timothy), and also will be well-prepared and coached, so who the heck knows.

Olmsted Falls could be a sneaky top-six team this year, given that they return 3/4 of the A team that made the playoffs at this year's HSNCT, and so could Ottawa Hills (everyone's back from the team that was T8 at SSNCT). I think Cloverleaf is also mostly back. Dublin Jerome seems to have a bunch of good players, led by rising senior and Ohio All-Star Andrew Zhang. Don't sleep on Tippecanoe and leading scorer Michael Vestey. Kyle Yu (U.S. Geography Olympiad national champion) is a rising senior for Westlake.

I also would be interested to see where the "next Lakewood" might come from...I'm guessing it'll be another Columbus-area squad (I hear a few more of the big schools are getting established/entering leagues), and Pranav told me that he's seen Poland Seminary putting together good performances in the Mahoning League just based on pure academics (Greg could probably speak more to that).

Just because I watched a decent amount of middle school games last year, here's my Freshman Report (TM), assuming everyone plays, is where I think they are, etc.: I touched on Nathan Hazlett (Copley) above, but he's really good. Was counted on to score across the board for the MS team for three straight years, but I think he's best at literature/humanities? Also moving to 9th grade from Copley-Fairlawn is second scorer Nicholas Carrino, who had a power percentage of over 50% at MSNCT.

Samantha Street (Northmont) ended last season playing for the varsity team, and I wouldn't be shocked if she leads the Bolts in scoring by the end of this year, even with a couple juniors (Caitlin and Ryan) returning for Northmont A. Samantha has a very strong grasp of the literature canon already, and with Kara Combs joining David Jones's coaching staff she'll have no shortage of great guidance. Her, Nathan, Arvind Nair from Hyatts, and William Groger would be my four "blue-chip" recruits if this were the NFL draft or something. Northmont has a bunch of other rising 9th graders as well, the most accomplished of whom is probably Sean Scranton.

With the arrival of Arvind Nair (see above) and RJ LaRosa, Olentangy Liberty adds the rest of the Hyatts nucleus that finished T21 at the 2016 MSNCT, so a youth movement could be brewing in Powell as most of Liberty A graduates. A third Hyatts player, Spencer Green, is moving to (I believe) St. Charles...his rate of improvement has been excellent over the last couple years.

Beavercreek picks up Tegan Kapadia, who played well at History Bee & Bowl as well as Northmont's SCOP mirror...look for him to gain some seasoning on the B team this year and carry a decent load there.

Cleveland Heights/Roxnercello's Leo Keneally is another impact player...I don't know whether he's a 9th grader this year or not, but if he ends up playing for Solon at some point he'll be one to watch.

Jack Szklarz and Camille Wheeler were both strong players for Heritage Classical, but I don't know what grades they're in or what their landscape looks like after middle school as part of the Heritage Classical collective.

Miami Valley adds first and second scorers William Groger and Sahir Kabir from last year's middle school A team.

Apologies if I missed anyone!

Camille will be joining her sister at Western Reserve Academy. They will have a new coach this year and they are hoping to be more active.

Since I didn't read for middle school at all this year, I didn't even realize there was another Wheeler. Jasmine was incredible as an 8th grader and I hope her and her sister can bring WRA back to some prominence. For awhile in the late 90s and early 2000s, they were a very competitive squad. Hopefully, with their new coach (is it Doug?), they can bring them back to some prominence.

Its pretty scary to me that the majority of the 'star' Ohio players will still be underclassmen next year. The future looks bright for the Buckeye State.

I am not sure. His wife is working there now so it may be one of them.

Their starters from their "A" team will all be seniors this year.

Brandi (my wife) and I will be coaching the team at Western Reserve Academy this upcoming year; we are just finishing the week at Ace QB camp. It was nice meeting so many different coaches, former players, and players this week; we feel prepared to try and rebuild the program. Jasmine Wheeler and Camille Wheeler will be playing for the team this year; Jack Szklarz will be joining Cameron and his team at Cloverleaf.

1. Beavercreek:
This is by far the most well rounded team in the state with a very impressive Hari Parameswaran at the front. Behind Hari are Ziyi Zuo and David Cohen, both of whom are very impressive individually. Hari is very good at history but also strong in art with good knowledge in most other fields as well. If Abby or Shwetha gets good at literature, this could be at least a top 10 national team.

2. Scioto:
Clark Smith

3. Miami Valley:
With the Groger brothers and an excellent coach I expect Miami Valley to go far at nats and definitely put up a top 3 showing at states.

4. Solon:
Returning most of their full team, (including Timmy and Sam) and with another very solid coach, Solon is bound to be excellent this coming year

5. Copley:
Tommy and Srikar are returning bringing back two very solid players to a school that is always good.

Everything else in kind of up in the air. Sidney and Fisher both lost their top two scorers. Scioto lost Enoch. Northmont lost Kara. Changes to many top teams and additions to other teams should make for an interesting Ohio. I expect an up and coming team will be the Michael Vestey led Tippecanoe. Fisher requires rebuilding, but might bounce back by the end of the year. O Lib also should do well with the size and academic prowess of the school. A Pranav Padmanabhan led Boardman could also do some real damage.

Nevertheless, good luck to all playing next year!

I think Scioto v Beavercreek will be fun matches to watch. I hope to bring Harrison over to a couple tournaments but now that I'm gone, the want of pyramids may be weak among the upperclassmen. We have a promising set of freshmen though!
