2/2: Miami Valley Groundhog Day Invitational (Deep Bench)

Postby trbenedict » Wed Nov 14, 2018 4:32 pm

The Miami Valley School quiz bowl team cordially invites you to its Groundhog Day Invitational on February 2, 2019. This tournament will take place at The Miami Valley School: 5151 Denise Drive, Dayton, OH 45429.

Format

This year, the tournament will be played in the Deep Bench format, a mix of singles, doubles, and team matches. This means schools will need to register with rosters of six players. Read on for how Deep Bench works:

In the morning of the tournament, each school will need to split their six-person team and designate one person to play "first singles," one person to play 'second singles," one pair to play "first doubles," and one pair to play "second doubles." To use players from last year's Ohio NASAT team (Clark Smith, Hari Parameswaran, Sam Oguntoyinbo, John John Groger, William Groger, and Eddy Liu) as the example:

First Singles: Clark Smith
Second Singles: Hari Parameswaran
First Doubles: Sam Oguntoyinbo and William Groger
Second Doubles: John John Groger and Eddy Liu

All first singles players will play a tossups-only round robin against the other first singles players, second singles vs. the other second singles players, etc. A school earns 4 points for a win in the first division and 3 points for a win in the second division.

In the afternoon, each school will split its roster into two trios, like so:

Ohio A: Clark Smith, Hari Parameswaran, Sam Oguntoyinbo
Ohio B: John John Groger, William Groger, Eddy Liu

All "A" and "B" teams will play a round robin against the other teams in their division, with matches being 20 tossups and 20 bonuses. A school earns 5 points for a win in the "A" division and 4 points for a win in the "B" division.

At the end of the tournament, all points will be totaled and the first place school will receive a trophy. The winners of each bracket (singles 1 & 2, doubles 1 & 2, and trios 1 & 2) will receive a trophy as well.

The initial field cap for this tournament is 6 teams (with each team carrying six players on its roster). This has the same staff requirements as a 24 team tournament in the morning, and a 12 team tournament in the afternoon. With that in mind, we are requiring that each school attending must bring (at least) one buzzer system OR one experienced reader. If you can bring more than one buzzer or reader, you will receive discounts on your registration fee as outlined below.

Question Set

This tournament will be held on the BLISS set, a regular-difficulty high school set written by Boston Latin High School in Massachusetts. The morning will be tossups-only, and the afternoon will use tossups and bonuses.

Registration and Fee Structure

To register for the tournament, email me at tyler DOT benedict AT mvschool DOT com. A full roster for this tournament is six players, and there will not be substitutions allowed during the morning singles and doubles once the tournament has started (except in cases of extreme emergency). Teams may substitute in players during the afternoon trios, but no player can switch divisions during the competition.

Teams are required to bring (at least) one buzzer system or one experienced reader with their registration (this is why the initial fee is low).

Team of 6 Players PLUS Buzzer or Reader: $40
Additional Buzzer DISCOUNT: -$5 (no limit to number of discounts except minimum fee below)
Additional Reader DISCOUNT: -$10 (no limit to number of discounts except minimum fee below)
Travel DISCOUNT: There is a $10 discount for teams traveling over 100 miles one way (our zip code is 45429).
MINIMUM FEE: $20

Payment can be made to The Miami Valley School (put "Quiz Bowl" in the memo). Our address is 5151 Denise Dr, Dayton, OH 45429. You may also bring cash or check to the tournament site.

Food

For lunch, we will offer cheese and pepperoni pizza for $10/pie and Chick-fil-A boxed lunches for $7/meal. The Chick-fil-A boxes contain a chicken sandwich, chips, and a cookie.

To register or for more information contact Tyler Benedict: tyler DOT benedict AT mvschool DOT com. We hope to see you in Dayton in February!

Dear all,

Due to some space issues at our school and lower registration numbers, this tournament will be postponed to March 9th.

For simplicity and in hopes of providing a more attractive event, the March 9 tournament will be standard 4-on-4 quizbowl (i.e., not in Deep Bench format with singles & doubles). We will also be making a question set change to the RMBAT set written by Richard Montgomery and Montgomery Blair High Schools.

Since the March 9 event will be an essentially new tournament, there will be a new tournament announcement posted for the "Miami Valley Spring Invitational." Please follow that new thread for updates.
